We needed night stands.
With a king size bed, the night stands needed some heft, some size, some scale. Not being a fan of the ‘matchy’ bedroom sets, the world was our oyster in selecting bed side tables…it only took about 3-4 weeks of obsessive Kijiji & CraigsList stalking to find these beauties:
Finding 2 tables/stands that were at least somewhat similar, AND the proper height and width was the challenge. These are not exactly the same, but I actually liked the subtle differences. The sellers were an older couple who told us they purchased these wash stands in the 50’s at a farm sale.
They were both in reasonably good shape, so we didn’t have to do a lot of filling or repairs. A bit of sanding, and 2 coats of spray (of course) primer, and they were ready to be white. Which of course, you knew, because they’re for the bedroom, right?
This is what they look like now….
The Mister added castors, which raised them another 1.5” or so. And of course, we changed the hardware to crystal (well, crystal-ish) knobs.
SO PRETTY.
We took an old mirror (from a mirror we changed in a bathroom) to a local glass & mirror place, and for $13, he cut the mirror to the size of each night stand top.
We nailed in some very fine moulding around the top edge, so that the mirror was inset – this keeps it in place, hides the raw edge, and finishes the pieces off nicely.
As a finishing touch I added some pretty scrapbooking paper to the bottom of each drawer inside. I glued it down with ModPodge, and then coated the top once it was pressed into place & smoothed out. Just a fun & unexpected touch.
LOVE THEM.
Seriously, the hardest part of this project was actually finding them.
And just one more look at the transformation:
So, all’s well that ends well, right? Of course not.
Now I want need new dressers to paint white for the bedroom. BUT, the Mister thinks the furniture we have is “just fine”. And though that’s true, who wants “just fine”? These nightstands look so great, they’re making the dressers we have just feel bad. They’re cringing, knowing they’re out of their league now.
I personally don’t want humiliated dressers….he has no compassion, THAT’s the real issue.
I’m stalking Kijiji again. It’ll all be better soon.
SO….UPDATE: “Sell something before you get something” the Mister said….well, we now have NO dressers because ours sold so quickly. That’s 14 drawers of clothing, where? Right. On the floor.

I created the soulstyle 'musings’ as a place to share my passion for color & interior decor, my thoughts & inspirations, and sometimes my life — I'm really glad you're here!

When I first saw the cute washstands, I was worried they were going to be ruined. I’m a fan of natural wood and antiques, so sometimes I cringe…
But I LOVED this transformation! They are brilliant (literally with the mirror and “crystal”), and totally better than the orangey wood colour they were before.
Nice job!
Thanks Ashley! And I agree with you, I love natural wood & antiques too; in fact I have another antique washstand that I would NEVER paint. These ones were pretty basic pine, so even re-finishing wouldn’t have made them pretty (or valuable
. Love when you visit!
Just gorgeous! You did such a beautiful job, you wouldn’t even guess these are the same washstands! They look so fab, really chic, and I love all the sparkle of the mirror and the crystal knobs
I need to know how you got such a smooth paint finish!

I absolutely LOVE them! They look awesome. I just did a post on how Im on the hunt for a sideboard so I can DIY a mirrored buffet. Seeing this really gave me some awesome ideas on how to do it. The best part to me are the castors!! Love it.
This is beautiful! I love the added touch of the moulding, mirror and scrapbooking paper! Oh and where did you get the little clock? I need one!

Thanks Nancy! The little clock? Home Sense of course!
Holy cow! They look fantastic. My favorite element is the mirror on the top. {Brilliant idea to recycle an old mirror BTW!}
Warmly, Michelle
