A Family Room re-designed

Family Room Design

This is the Family Room that (now) adjoins the Kitchen we recently completed.

Gorgeous, isn’t it?

Here’s where we started….

Family Room Before & After

The functional changes we made to this space included closing up an entrance from the hallway, and removing a half wall into the kitchen.  This created a more open concept, and a better layout / design for both spaces.

The first design decision made was the chocolate maple hardwood, relating to the lower kitchen cabinets in the now open space.  Consistency and repetition will create harmony in these adjoining spaces – so with that first element decided, here’s the steps and design choices we made.

Quartzite stone fireplace

The black ceramic tile fireplace surround and measly mantle definitely had to change.  This quartzite stone has just the right colors & beautiful texture; taking it floor to ceiling created the perfect centrepiece for built-ins on either side.

Family Room Built-ins

The built-ins were designed with closed storage on the bottom, practical for a family room, and floating shelves above so that they felt open and lighter. Lights were added into the header at the top.  The finish is the same as the upper cabinetry in the kitchen – adding to that cohesive flow.

Family Room 2 sofas

Removing the entrance from the hallway eliminated a previously necessary traffic path – this allowed for 2 full size sofas in the room facing each other; a perfect conversation grouping.  Full length drapery panels in charcoal linen fill out the back wall. The sofa leather is called ‘Pewter’ – a slightly distressed, gray-ish taupe colour, just slightly darker than the wall colour, CC-518 Escarpment.

Family Room Upholstered Ottoman

This room has generous proportions – overall  17 x 12’6” ; even with 2 42 “ deep and 91” long sofas, we had room to spare!  This custom ottoman is 44” x 44”  – lots of room for feet up lounging.  The subtle toned plaid upholstery fabric and the area rug are cream, beige & charcoal, a combination of all the colours in this room.

Family Room Decor

An out of view console/sofa table sits behind the sofa, with buffet lamps.  This side of the room (from the opening into the kitchen) is deeper than the other side, so the console was added to ‘bump’ the sofa forward, so that everything centers on the fireplace / focal point.  I’m in love with the antiqued arch mirrors on this wall – they reflect light from the window on the opposite wall, and add so much character.

DIY Ottoman Tray

DIY Wood Sign

I designed & created the ottoman tray, & the ‘Gather’ sign above the family room entry.  Using pieces of cedar fence boards & spray painted plumbing pipes (really!) for the tray handles, and wooden letters on the sign, they add some personality and casual flair.  The wood stain repeats the kitchen table tones –  repetition throughout creates a polished and sophisticated result.

My clients are very happy with their new Family Room.  A previously impractically designed room that offered zero warmth is now an inviting place for family to congregate – a space that’s a beautiful, stylish background for the most important detail of all – family life.

Very nice job! Wow! 😀 I just found you through the QC newsletter! I have a very troublesome living room! 🙁 But this layout may have actually given me a start! Thank You!! LOL! 🙂

    • Thank you Nichole! Well, I’m glad you found me, and I hope you grab a tea (or a martini :)) and browse around for a bit! There’s usually a way to turn troublesome into something amazing! xoT

      • Nichole says:

Ha! I have actually pulled up QUITE the chair! LOL! I am learning a lot! I am only in B of my course work, so I still have much to learn! Hoping my staging career will be as successful as your is! Thanks again!

        • And You’ll continue to learn long after your courses are done! I wish you every success! xoT

  11. Colleen says:

Beautiful! Do you mind sharing where you found the mirrors?

    • Thank you Colleen! The mirrors were sourced direct from the manufacturer, Uttermost. Gorgeous, aren’t they? xoT.

  12. This room is so beautiful.. I have been getting tired of neutral rooms recently, but this room doesn’t read as neutral. It truly shows what varying textures and using a whole neutral palette (not just monotones) can do in a room. I love it.

    • Thank you so much Iris! I agree, big difference between ‘easy to live with’ tones and boring neutrals! Thanks for visiting, I hope you’ll check in again! xoT

  13. Kathy T says:

whre did you purchase the gray sofas? beautiful !

    • Hi Kathy, the sofas were sourced at Decor-Rest, a Canadian manufacturer… they are beautiful, and super comfy!! xoT

  14. This truly is a beautiful room. I love the Gather sign and ottoman tray that your created, as well as those arched window-like mirrors. It gives such a clean-lined space a touch of rustic, castle-like romance. 🙂

    • Thanks Yvonne! Both the sign and the ottoman tray were such simple projects…I probably should have documented the processes for another post! 🙂 Thanks for visiting…. xoT

  15. Hello! Where did you get your leather couch?

  16. Love the fireplace, we have ivory travertine floors with the grey walls as well and just built a floor to ceiling fireplace/ tevevision but am having trouble picking a color for the floor to ceiling stacked stone. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Dave, Tough for me to weigh in with that limited info, but I can say that the white ledgestone in this project is beautiful and might fit with your travertine in yours. There are shade variations in the stone that make it very versatile. Good luck! T.

  17. Where did you get the ottoman from? I really like it!

  18. Can u share the quartzite manufacturer? Please

    • Hi Kate, I’m sorry, I don’t have the quartzite manufacturer. If you are looking to source it, I am certain that your local tile supplier would be able to identify it or a similar product with the photo. xoT.

  19. Where did you get the stone for the fire place? it is BEAUTIFUL!

  20. I REALLY want to put a 70 inch TV above our fireplace but all the designs I see have the TV too high-I don’t want to look up at the TV. Our couches will be 13 feet away, so we can handle a 70 inch. This TV seems lower…how did you manage that with the fireplace heat/clearance?

    • Hi Paula – I wish I could give you the details on this, but it’s not really in my wheelhouse – There’s just some things I make design decisions about, and the contractors make it happen 🙂

  21. Hi, Tracy. Gorgeous room!
Can you please share where the rug came from?

  22. I love the room. Can you provide info on the area rug?
